AlterCom Policies and
Guidelines
Content
All services may be used for lawful
purposes only. Transmission, storage, or presentation of any information, data or material
in violation of any United States Federal, State or City law is prohibited. This includes,
but is not limited to: copyrighted material, material we judge to be threatening or
obscene, or material protected by trade secret and other statute. The subscriber agrees to
indemnify and hold us harmless from any claims resulting from the use of the service which
damages the subscriber or any other party.
Note: Pornography, Nudity and sex-related
merchandising are prohibited on all servers. This includes sites that may infer sexual
content, or link to adult content elsewhere. This is also true for sites that promote any
illegal activity or content that may be damaging to our servers or any other server on the
internet. Links to such materials are also prohibited.
In addition, any site selling or promoting
bulk email services or software is forbidden.
We take pride in having one of the strictest
anti-spam policies. To report abuses, please contact [abuse@altercom.com]
Examples of non-acceptable content or
links:
- Pirated software or other copyrighted materials
- Hackers programs or archives
- Warez Sites
- Irc Bots
- MP3's
We will be the sole arbiter as to what
constitutes a violation of this provision.
Site Traffic / Resource Usage
How many hits can a Virtual Domain support?
The bandwidth provided to your domain account is unlimited in that we do not charge you
any type of fee based on the amount of hits or network traffic generated by your site. You
can rest assured that there are no hidden charges based on the amount of traffic to or
from your domain account.
However, like all hardware, the Virtual Server Domain
system does have its limitations. If a particular Virtual Domain causes an AlterCom
server to experience poor performance, slowness, or other problems because of an unusually
high amount of traffic or activity, we may at our discretion contact the owner of the site
and discuss other alternatives or take other necessary steps to ensure stability and
reliability for all of our customers. At that time, a Sales Representative would contact
you to resolve the issue which may include helping you move to an advanced hosting
solution, such as a Dedicated Server.
For Web sites requiring extensive
system resources, you should consider purchasing a custom or Dedicated Server. These
advanced hosting solutions can handle Web sites with much higher amounts of traffic since
they do not share resouces with others users. Contact a Sales Representative for assistance in
determining which solution would be the best one for you.
As previously stated, we ordinarily
offer unlimited traffic for our clients. However, due to the unique resource
characteristics and traffic patterns associated with certain types of sites, the
following scenarios must be limited to 3 gigs of free traffic:
- Subhosting - any domain housing additional users
- Shareware, sound, video, image and multimedia archives
- Large amounts of streaming audio and/or video content.
- Mirror sites
- Distribution points
- Any site whose primary purpose is file distribution
CGI
Scripts
Each account comes with its own
cgi-bin. You are free to use any CGI scripts you wish, however we reserve the right to
disable any CGI script that affects normal server operation for the rest of our customers'
benefit. By their very nature, shared virtual hosting accounts do have their limits. We
monitor the servers regularly in order to anticipate such problems and advise our clients
of any irregularities.
Chat
Rooms
We can not allow clients to install their
own chat rooms. These tend to require extensive server resources and therefore we cannot
allowed as an account option at this time.
Background Running Programs
We may allow programs to run
continually in the background. These are considered on an individual basis and an extra
charge may be incurred based upon system resources used and operational maintenance
needed.
IRC
We currently do not
allow IRC or IRC bots to be operate on our servers.
Commercial
Advertising - Email
AlterCom servers may not be the
source, intermediary, or destination address involved in the transmission of
"spam", "flames", or "mail bombs". Your domain may not be
referenced as the originator, intermediary, or reply-to address in any of the above.
AlterCom considers spam to be any unsolicited commercial email (UCE) or unsolicited bulk
email (UBE) in the mediums of Newsgroups, Email, or Fax. If it is determined that you have
participated in these activities, then AlterCom will immediately, without a
warning, disable your domain. You will then be notified of the deactivation ASAP and why.
As such, any violation will result in
immediate deactivation of services without refund.
Server
Abuse
Any attempts to undermine or cause
harm to AlterComs' servers will be met with immediate disconnection and
cancellation of service. You will then be notified of the deactivation ASAP and why.
Innocent errors will be dealt with in a constructive manner.
Refusal
of Service
AlterCom reserves the right to
refuse service or cancel service at our sole discretion. Failure to follow any of the terms or conditions will result in
grounds for immediate account deactivation until the violation(s) are examined and
clarified.
We reserve the right to shut down - without warning -
a server or servers, or the system in order to prevent or stop, expanding damage to your,
and others' service. It is our responsibility to restore service to you as soon as
posssible. Any failure of service on our part will be met with compensatory time and or
other remedial measures.
